MILANO, Italy — Inter Milan's title credentials were never in doubt heading into this Serie A clash at San Siro, but the manner of their 5-2 demolition of AS Roma on Saturday left little room for debate. The Nerazzurri, perched atop the table with 72 points, needed a response after back-to-back draws against Fiorentina and Atalanta, and they delivered it in emphatic fashion against a Roma side sitting sixth and desperate to claw back ground on the European places. From the very first second, this was Inter's night.
The opening goal arrived before Roma had even drawn breath. In the 1st minute — barely a heartbeat into the contest — Lautaro Martínez latched onto Marcus Thuram's incisive delivery and drilled a right-footed effort from the centre of the box high into the centre of the goal. It was a statement of intent, a sucker punch that set the tone for everything that followed. Roma, to their credit, refused to buckle. They worked their way back into the match through patient build-up play and were rewarded in the 40th minute when Gianluca Mancini rose to meet Devyne Rensch's corner-kick cross and powered a header from very close range into the top left corner, levelling the tie and briefly silencing the San Siro faithful.
The equaliser, however, lasted barely two minutes of added time. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Piotr Zielinski threaded a precise pass to Hakan Çalhanoglu, who stepped back and unleashed a right-footed thunderbolt from outside the box that screamed into the high centre of the goal. It was a goal of genuine quality, and it sent Inter into the break with a 2-1 advantage and all the momentum. The blow was compounded for Roma when Mancini — their equalising hero — was forced off through injury at the interval, replaced by Daniele Ghilardi.
If the first half had been dramatic, the second was a rout. Inter emerged from the tunnel with predatory intent, and within seven minutes they had put the game beyond Roma's reach. In the 52nd minute, Martínez struck again — his second of the night — converting another Thuram assist with a composed right-footed finish from the centre of the box to make it 3-1. Three minutes later, the roles were reversed: Çalhanoglu whipped in a corner, and Thuram met it with a powerful header from the centre of the box, guiding the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 4-1. San Siro erupted.
Simone Inzaghi's side showed no mercy. In the 63rd minute, Nicolò Barella capped a breathtaking team move by driving a left-footed strike from the centre of the box into the top left corner — a goal of real technical precision that put the result beyond any doubt. Roma's Niccolò Pisilli had already been cautioned with a yellow card three minutes earlier as frustration began to set in among the visitors. Lorenzo Pellegrini offered Roma a late consolation in the 70th minute, curling a left-footed effort from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner to make it 5-2, but it amounted to little more than a footnote on a miserable evening for the Giallorossi.
The tactical battle was largely one-sided after the opening exchanges. The teams shared possession almost equally at 50%-50%, which made Inter's clinical efficiency all the more devastating — they simply made far better use of their half of the ball. Thuram and Martínez combined with devastating chemistry throughout the first hour, while Çalhanoglu and Zielinski controlled the midfield tempo with authority. For Roma, goalkeeper Mile Svilar worked hard, making 4 saves to Inter's 1, but he was ultimately powerless against the relentless wave of Nerazzurri attacks. Federico Dimarco also threatened from the left, with Alessandro Bastoni forcing Svilar into a stop before being substituted in the 58th minute.
The turning point, if one moment could be singled out, was Çalhanoglu's stoppage-time strike just before the break. Roma had fought back to parity and appeared to be growing in confidence, but that clinical finish — struck with such conviction from distance — deflated the visitors entirely. The second half felt inevitable from that moment, with Inter's quality and depth proving far too much for a Roma side that had already shown defensive vulnerabilities in recent weeks.
The scoreboard resets; the table does not. Inter carry 72 points and renewed momentum into their next fixture against Como on April 12, while Roma — bruised and beaten — must regroup swiftly before travelling to face Pisa on the same date.
